Recorder Practice Steps: In class, and anytime we practice our instrument, we use the following 4 steps:
1. Clap and say the rhythm syllables-Ta's and ta-di's 2. Clap and say the song words-If there aren't any, you get to skip this one :) 3. Finger and say the note names-Practice putting your fingers in the correct places for each note 4. Play! These steps are in place to help make each student a more independent music reader and musician. It may take more time right now, but it will get easier. Please encourage your child to use these every time they practice their recorder! |

Recorder Skills
We will be beginning the recorder in January. If your child has it at home, please have them start bringing it to school. so they are ready this cool unit! An order form has gone home if your child needs to purchase one.
Your child will be able to bring their own recorder home to practice....BUT they MUST remember to bring it back for music class every time! If they forget their instrument 3 times before the end of the year, a note will go home notifying you that they will not be allowed to take their recorder home until the end of the year. Not having a recorder in class will strongly affect their participation/effort grades and their skill grades. Thank you for your support!
The file to the right of this paragraph is a copy of the rubric I use for each Recorder Skill Grade. If you have any questions about what any of the 6 skills are, do not hesitate to ask me to explain further.

If you need to find where to buy a recorder:
A few places that are great to find recorders at are:
1. Strait Music Co.-S Lamar and 290
2. Guitar Center-290 and MoPac
3. Music & Arts-Brodie and 290
Any other instrument store or vendor in Austin. PLEASE DO NOT purchase the First Act recorders at Target. They are more expensive and the quality is horrendous.
You could also order online at www.rhythmband.com
The AU303I soprano recorder through Rhythm Band is the one we have in class.
